Most consumer lithium-ion cells are focused solely on initial capacity and ignore all other concerns such as safety and longevity.

At LiFePO₄wered, we do things differently. We focus on longevity and safety instead. Our competitors may find it OK to use consumer lihium-ion cells that only last a couple hundred cycles and die quickly when held at full charge in a UPS, but we use LiFePO₄ cells instead, which will last for years.

Powerful 2 A continuous load

Fully tested and characterized

We don't make claims about load currents based just on component specs. The LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™ uses an 8 A boost converter and has been characterized on a statistically relevant sample size to support 2 A of continuous load current, both when plugged in and when running from the battery, with the standard 18650 size LiFePO₄ cell.

Automatically optimizes source power draw

The LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™ charger employs a Maximum Power Point controller and smart power sharing system to make the system automatically adapt to the amount of current available from the power source and allow for higher load current than charge current.

This means it can draw high currents from a powerful 3 A USB charger, and still not overload a less capable power source such as a PC USB port.

Even better, the smart input power stage makes it possible for the LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™ to be directly powered from 5V – 20V power sources, including solar panels!

True UPS functionality

An end to corrupted SD cards

The LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™ has the battery capacity and load current needed to provide UPS (uninterruptible power supply) functionality even for power hungry high performance Raspberry Pi systems that include a screen or external hard drive. It was designed to keep a system running indefinitely and will smoothly switch from external to battery power and back without hiccups.

Moreover, the system will always perform a clean shutdown before power is removed from the Pi. It can also be configured to automatically boot the Raspberry Pi whenever enough battery power is available or when the external power is restored, making it a true UPS solution.

Convenient control for headless systems

When you use the Raspberry Pi without user interface, you may think you have no choice but to pull power from a running system to turn it off.

Now there is a better way! The LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™ provides a button to turn the Pi on and turn it back off after doing a proper shutdown first. A power LED indicates system state while a charge LED indicates when the system is taking in external power.

Smart features

Wake up timers, RTC and watchdog

The LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™ has many smart features that make using the Raspberry Pi in an off-grid application practical. There are wake up timers for both intervals and absolute time to save battery power, a real time clock that restores system time when the Pi boots, and an application watchdog that can monitor and reboot the system back to a know state if there's a hangup.

While the Pi is off, the LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™ keeps track of time and monitors system voltages while consuming only 4 µA typically, allowing standby times of years on a single charge!

Host software tools

Easy access to configuration and data

The Raspberry Pi and LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™ communicate with each other over the I²C bus. A command line tool, shared library and language bingings for Python and Node.js are available to allow users to easily access the data inside the LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™.

Using these tools, the user can access system parameters and configure features such as the wake-up timer, auto-shutdown timer and auto-boot settings. Some of the parameters can be written to flash to make changes permanent even if the battery is removed.

The flexibility you need for your project

We understand you want the flexibility to make your project "just so", and we kept this in mind while designing the LiFePO₄wered/Pi+™!

There's the possibility to remove the on-board battery and holder if you want to connect a large capacity LiFePO₄ and achieve insane run times. There's the input power flexibility of 5 V – 20 V and solar with customizable MPP, there are large solder pads to be able to connect your own power button and LEDs, and even connections to permanently connect input power and external loads such as case fans. Plus with the stackable header option, you can still add whatever HAT your application needs!
